Your Mother was right when she said…

I’ve Got Your Back…

  • It consists of 24 strangely shaped bones

  • It has a remarkable range of movement

  • The spinal column is the foundation for the back and neck.

  • The back bones (vertebrae) have different shapes and sizes depending on where they are located

  • The lower spine is designed to move backward and forward.

  • The mid-back has special features to allow more twisting and rotating.

  • The neck is designed to allow a huge amount of movement and flexibility in all directions

DON’T SLOUCH! SIT UP STRAIGHT!

Almost every movement you make involves your back in one way or another. Far too many of us just take this for granted.

Your back is key to healthy posture. Healthy posture not only looks and feels good it also helps the body function at it’s best.

When you sit slouched with your chin jutting forward you place a great deal of stress on your back and neck.

To sit properly make sure  your desk and chair are at the correct height for you.

Your feet should be flat on the floor and your forearms need to be parallel to your work surface.

When you are standing with correct posture your weight

should be evenly balanced over both legs.

Your whole body from your ears to shoulders, hips, knees to your ankles should be in alignment.

Knees and feet should be parallel and facing forward.

Make your Mother proud!

Lifting the Correct Way…

Safe lifting means getting close to the object you want to pick up.

Bend with your knees instead of your back.

Keep your feet wide apart to give you a good base of support.

ALWAYS lift with your knees bent and your back straight.

When carrying heavy things keep them close to your body so not to strain your shoulders.

Turn your body only once you are standing up straight.

A few warm up exercises are great if you plan on doing heavy lifting or other physical work.

Lifting NO NO’s!!!

Do not lean backward!

Do not twist your body as you are lifting!

This combination of bending and twisting is responsible for more spinal injuries than any other form of movement!

Ask Me For Self Care Tips

When you come in for your massage treatment ask me for a copy of self care tips for your back.

Thanks to a colleague from Colorado, Alfred Westlake Jr. who has generously given me permission to pass on his SelfCareTips “Pain between the Shoulder Blades” and “The Backroll” to my clients.
