Even though the holidays are suppose to be a time of joy and hope for the coming new year, many of us suffer from seasonal “blues”.

The holiday blues can be caused by many factors such as increased stress & fatigue and unrealistic expectations.

Not being able to be with one’s family is especially difficult.

We have increased demands on our time for shopping, parties, family reunions and often house guests that contribute to feelings of tension.

Headaches, excessive drinking,

overeating and difficulty

sleeping are stress reactions that can develop.

Although many people become depressed over the holidays even more people suffer with post-holiday letdown.

There are ways to

 Head Off Those Blues

Ways to Reduce Your Holiday Stress

Know Your Budget

A lot of stress during the holidays is due to the fact that we feel that we have to buy expensive gifts.

Many of us feel that we show how much we love someone by the amount of money that we spend on them. Even if this puts us in a great deal of debt.

These people would probably feel terrible that we put ourselves in debt on their behalf.

Sit down and determine what you can comfortably afford to spend. It’s tempting but stick to this budget.

Thoughtful doesn’t have to be expensive

Make a List

Just like Santa making a list will save a lot of time and hopefully prevent those expensive impulse buys.

Create a checklist of the people you are buying gifts for and divide your budget among them in a way that makes sense to you.  When you buy their gift cross them off the list.

Be efficient by choosing stores where you can get the most things on your list.

If it’s possible try to condense your shopping into one or two trips.

Shop Early

I’m guilty of this one. Putting off Christmas shopping until the last minute.

If you shop earlier there is a much better selection. Nothing is a frustrating as not finding what you want to buy because the shops are all sold out.

This also helps to avoid those line ups at the malls and the post office.

Shopping earlier in the week and in the morning tends to be a way you can avoid some of the crowds.

Getting your shopping out of the way early gives you the time to just enjoy the season.

Keep It Simple

If you find a great gift at a good price buy several of them for different people on your shopping list.

Include the cash receipt with your gift so you can be rest assured that if the gift is not right it can be easily exchanged.

We all have those people on our lists that we always have a hard time to find a gift for. Get gift cards or gift certificates.  You can find them available for everything from movies, dinner or to a massage.
